An increased number of disguised email viruses want your banking information

In addition to emails fraudulently claiming to be from the FDIC, there are now others claiming to be from places like UPS, that are attempting to trick recipients into installing unknown software on personal computers. These emails falsely indicate that recipients should download and open a "personal FDIC insurance file" to check their deposit insurance coverage or to check on an undeliverable package. The files or sites these email messages link to may actually contain forms of of spyware or malicious code and seek to collect personal or confidential information. Some may even wait in hiding, ready to hijack your online banking login information.

The e-mails ask recipients to visit a site or download a file by clicking on an official-looking hyperlink, which directs recipients to a fraudulent Web site. The Web site includes hyperlinks that appear to open forms. However, it is believed that clicking on the hyperlinks will cause an unknown executable file to be downloaded.

Recipients should consider the intent of the software as a malicious attempt to collect personal or confidential information, some of which may be used to gain unauthorized access to online banking services or to conduct identity theft. Financial institutions and consumers should not access the Web site or download the executable files provided on the Web site.

It is always a good practice to utilize a personal firewall and some form of anti-virus software on your commputer. You can protect and prevent most computer virus problems by keeping your anti-virus software up to date, and by being wise in your email usage. The rule of thumb is: If in doubt, first find out. Do not open any message that appears suspect without first contacting (by phone, if possible) the individual or organization named in the message or from whom the message was sent.
